Queensland Seniors Month 2026: Connect, Celebrate and Enjoy Life This October

Queensland Seniors Month 2026: Connect, Celebrate and Enjoy Life This October

October is a chance to celebrate the people, stories and experiences that have helped shape our families and communities. Queensland Seniors Month runs throughout October, encouraging older Queenslanders to stay connected, participate in their communities and be recognised for the contribution they continue to make. The 2026 theme, “Connect and celebrate,” puts those relationships at the heart of the month.

Getting older does not mean stepping back from life. It can mean having more time for the people you enjoy, discovering new interests, sharing what you know and staying involved in the community around you.

Whether you are a senior yourself, have an older parent or grandparent, or simply know someone who would appreciate a little extra connection, October is a wonderful reason to reach out.

Connection Can Be Something Simple
Staying connected does not have to involve a big event or a packed social calendar. Often, the most meaningful moments are the simple ones.

It could be having morning tea with a neighbour, phoning an old friend, joining a walking group, visiting family or sitting down together for lunch. For some people, connection might mean returning to a hobby they once enjoyed. For others, it could be learning something new.

The important part is finding something that feels enjoyable and comfortable for you.

Why Intergenerational Connection Matters
One of the loveliest ways to celebrate Seniors Month is to bring different generations together.

Carinity’s Young at Heart story shows how valuable these connections can be. Students from schools and kindergartens regularly visit residents at Carinity aged care communities to talk, read, play games, make crafts and simply spend time together.

At Carinity Clifford House, students from Kedron State High School have joined residents for concerts, bingo, magic acts and bocce. One resident, Alex, spoke about how the visits help him feel part of a larger community, while students enjoy hearing residents’ stories and discovering what life was like when they were younger.

The connection works both ways. Older people have decades of stories, skills and experience to share, while younger people bring their own perspectives, curiosity and energy.

Celebrate the Stories That Deserve to Be Heard
Seniors Month is also a chance to celebrate experiences that can sometimes be overlooked in everyday life.

Ask a parent or grandparent about their first job. Look through old photographs together. Cook an old family recipe. Ask what school was like or what music they listened to.

These conversations allow stories, traditions and knowledge to move between generations. For seniors, being asked to share those experiences can be a reminder that their stories matter. For younger family members, they can reveal parts of family history they may never have heard before.

A Shared Meal Is Still One of the Best Ways to Connect
Food has always had a way of bringing people together. Some of the best conversations

happen around the kitchen table, over lunch with an old friend or while sharing dinner with family.

Gourmet Meals has been part of the Gold Coast community since 1993, preparing homestyle meals for generations of local families. For seniors who would prefer to spend less time shopping, cooking and cleaning up, Gourmet Meals offers nutritious, portion-controlled, snap-frozen meals that can be delivered directly to the home.

That convenience leaves more time for what a meal can really be about: sitting down together, sharing stories and enjoying the people around you.

This October, make time to connect and celebrate. Explore Gourmet Meals or learn more about convenient meal options and support for older Australians on the Gourmet Meals Aged Care page.
