Raising awareness for coeliac disease

Raising awareness for coeliac disease

One in 70 people are affected by coeliac disease, yet many thousands of Australians remain undiagnosed.

From 13-20 March, Coeliac Australia is committed to increase not only awareness of the disease, but also increase the diagnosis of coeliac disease Australia-wide.

The aim of Coeliac Awareness Week is to capture the attention of the 80 per cent of Australians who are living with coeliac disease – but are unaware they are doing so.

Through getting the message out, it is hoped that many more Australians can recognise the symptoms early, visit a GP and seek the appropriate treatment.

But the responsibility doesn’t rest solely with the patient. It is so important for health professionals to also be more aware of the illness so they can correctly diagnose coeliac disease.

The condition is so commonly under diagnosed, or in other instances, it takes a very long time to be detected by most GP’s simply because it’s not top of mind.

Unfortunately, undiagnosed coeliac disease is associated with an increased risk of other conditions such as infertility, osteoporosis and lymphoma – but early diagnosis can reduce these risks.

It goes without saying that coeliac disease is serious medical illness.

Those who are already diagnosed and living with the disease know all too well that it’s not a gluten-free diet fad - but strict and essential means of preventing bowel damage, iron deficiency and chronic inflammation - among other symptoms.
