Vegetarian Vs. Vegan: Which Diet is Right for You?

Vegetarian Vs. Vegan: Which Diet is Right for You?

With an increased focus on healthy eating and animal welfare, more and more people are choosing to ditch meat and adopt a plant-based diet. At Gourmet Meals, we offer both vegan and vegetarian meal options. But what's the difference between the two? Whilst both diets abstain from eating meat, there are some key distinctions that set vegans and vegetarians apart. Let's take a closer look at the difference between vegan and vegetarian diets.

Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish, or poultry. However, they may still eat eggs and dairy products. There are different types of vegetarianism, including lacto-ovo vegetarianism (which allows for the consumption of eggs and dairy) and ovo vegetarianism (which allows for the consumption of eggs but not dairy).

Vegans, on the other hand, do not consume any animal products whatsoever. In addition to NOT eating meat, fish, or poultry, vegans also avoid consuming eggs, dairy, honey, and anything else that comes from an animal. Some vegans even abstain from using products that have been tested on animals or contain animal-derived ingredients, such as leather goods or cosmetics.

Health Benefits Of A Plant-Based Diet

A plant-based diet has been linked with a variety of health benefits, including a lower risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and some forms of cancer. A review of 12 studies found that a vegetarian diet was associated with a lower risk of death from all causes compared with an omnivorous diet . Another study found that people who followed a mostly plant-based diet had a lower risk of dying from heart disease than those who ate meat . While these studies don't prove that going vegetarian or vegan will necessarily prolong your life, they do show that there are health benefits associated with a plant-based diet .

So, which diet is right for you? If you're looking to make a significant change in your eating habits but want to ease into it, vegetarianism might be a good place to start. If you're ready to commit fully to a plant-based diet, veganism might be a better fit.
