To meat or not?
In today’s media, we are constantly hearing about climate change and the need to actively reduce our carbon footprint to save this beautiful planet we all love so much. There is what seems to be an information overload surrounding this subject, leaving a great deal of us overwhelmed and confused as to what we as individuals can do to help. Here at Gourmet Meals, we’d like to shed some light on the topic, and look at it from a different perspective which will benefit not only the health of the planet but your overall well-being as well.
It’s a no brainer that the over-consumption of meat is detrimental for the planet and eating less of it would be better all round for the reduction of greenhouse emissions. Decreasing one’s meat intake can also improve one’s health, and for many it takes only very small lifestyle adjustments to make some very significant improvements.
Meat reducers or “reducetarians” are those committed to reducing meat consumption, and the more we let people know it is not an ‘all or nothing’ lifestyle, the more comfortable people will be to try it. Overall, for a balanced and healthy diet, the recommended portion of meat per meal does vary for individuals, and factors such as weight and health goals need to be taken into consideration.
At Gourmet Meals, our meat portions are generally between 50-80 grams per meal. This is not a huge amount compared to what some other meal providers in the industry offer, however, we believe that consuming balanced portions of all the food groups is best for one’s health and do not believe in overloading our meals with meat for extra protein. It is recommended that one’s diet should consist of 10-30% proteins and they should not only come from meat. You will find that in many of our high-protein meals the source of protein comes from plant-based ingredients also.
Apart from assisting with climate change by reducing greenhouse gases, there any many other advantages of reducing one’s meat intake such as:
- Reversing heart disease
- Reducing risk of cancer
- Reversing type 2 Diabetes
- Staying slim
- Saving money
- Reducing animal cruelty
- Saving the Amazon Rainforest
- Discovering more delicious recipes
Due to a growing demand, Gourmet Meals is now also able to offer 100% vegetarian meal options upon request. We recognize that while consuming a plant-based only diet is the healthier option for some, it is also becoming more of an ethical choice for many.
If you would like to discuss our vegetarian options with our friendly staff, please call us on 1300 112 112 and we’ll be more than happy to help. In the meantime, if you are just transitioning, or, still on the journey to be meat-free, we can also assist you with reducing your meat intake with our well-balanced, wholesome and nutritious meals.
The simple take away from this is that it does not have to be an “all or nothing” approach. You can start by taking baby steps to reduce your meat intake, which will not only improve your health, but also that of our precious planet.
