June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month

June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month

World Health Organization (WHO) statistics show that 1.8 million people around the world are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year. After lung cancer, it’s the second most common cancer in Australia, claiming the lives of over 100 Australians each week.

Bowel cancer affects any part of the rectum or colon, which form part of our large intestine. One in 13 Australians will develop bowel cancer in their lifetime. This staggering statistic highlights why awareness is so important and why we here at Gourmet Meals feel so strongly about it.

Bowel Cancer Awareness Month is a significant date on the calendar, with Bowel Cancer Australia raising awareness and funds for the prevention, early diagnosis, quality treatment and care for those affected by bowel cancer. Early detection is the cornerstone for success in beating this disease, as bowel cancer is one of the most curable types of cancer if found early.

A feature of Bowel Cancer Awareness Month is Red Apple Day, on 17 June. This is where Australians come together to raise funds and build awareness of bowel cancer by buying a bowel cancer awareness ribbon, as well as through apple-themed activities. Individuals or teams can get involved and it is often a lot of fun.

A healthy diet is important for helping prevent bowel cancer, including eating a variety of fruit and vegetables and reducing saturated fats (found in animal products, processed foods and takeaways).

Other ways to help prevent bowel cancer are regular screening if you’re over 50, regular physical activity, no smoking, maintaining a healthy body weight, only drinking moderate amounts of alcohol and knowing your family history.

Gourmet Meals can help you follow a healthy diet by providing nutritious, portion-controlled, balanced meals with the right ingredients for optimum health.
