New Year’s Resolutions vs All-Year Goals

New Year’s Resolutions vs All-Year Goals

2017 is here, and with it comes a myriad of people making New Year’s Resolutions.

Making resolutions is great, but for most people, they involve grand notions or major changes with little preparation or sustainable action plans to work towards reaching the end goal.

Because of this, New Year’s Resolutions now carry a stigma where the greatest efforts are made in the “New Year” but after a few months things start to taper off and you revert back to old habits.

Work towards your goals all year long by breaking them down into a series of smaller steps, and focusing on sub-goals that are measurable and time-based.

For example, rather than making a resolution to “lose 12kg in 2017”, break it down to losing 1kg each month, and striving to do so by combining regular exercise with a nutritious diet.

Then with the regular exercise sub-goal, it could be as simple as going for a daily walk or jog, or doing exercises in front of the TV at night like crunches, tricep dips, squats or lunges.

By introducing simple exercises that fit within your existing routine, you avoid burning yourself out in the first few weeks with intense workouts (which will only deter you from keeping it up in the longer term).

Likewise, healthy eating is not an all-or-nothing scenario. Make small and positive decisions on a daily basis to move towards good health, rather than trying an 8-week fad diet and expecting instant results.

Rallie McAllister, MD, MPH, looks at health as a continuum – i.e. every choice you make either moves you closer to the ‘good health’ end of the continuum or the ‘poor health’ end.

So having a can of soft drink would send you in the wrong direction, while drinking a glass of water would take you in the right direction towards good health.
