This year, Australians have been through the wringer! We've resisted droughts, fought fires and battled a global pandemic. This has really tested us, but we know that as a country we are resilient, and we will come through it all.
To celebrate our culture, land and togetherness, Australians across the country are now choosing to tour their own backyard. Not only because we can’t travel internationally, but also because there are so many beautiful places here at home to discover. Now is a great opportunity to demonstrate how much we love and appreciate this vast land of ours!
Domestic travel is simple and straight forward, and you can feel comfortable and safe as you travel within our own country. Here are a few ideas from our team about where you could go for your next trip.
Great Keppel Island. A day’s drive north of Brisbane is a destination that will satisfy your craving for a tropical island getaway. There are 17 pristine, white sandy beaches on the island and taking a walk along one of the hiking tracks is a great way to spend time. You can often spot humpback whales migrating from July through to November, or dolphins cruising past. A bit closer to home is the world’s largest sand island – Fraser Island, which at this time of year may offer some spectacular sights of the whales as well. The island has great camping sites and four-wheel driving opportunities along the beach, amazing rainforests and the beautiful freshwater lake McKenzie where one can go for a refreshing dip.
Stay local. Living on the Gold Coast, we have so many amazing places to visit right here on our doorstep. You can’t beat a day trip to one of our great local destinations, so use the opportunity to make one of those short trips you’ve been meaning to take.
If you enjoy the outdoors and are looking for day trips, consider the iconic Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. With 27 hectares of rainforest, you’ll enjoy connecting with nature. Another great natural attraction is Burleigh Head National Park, which offers some lovely walks along the foreshore and through the rainforest. If you’re in luck, you may see sea-eagles, dolphins and, in spring, whales.
Australia’s Sea World has recently reopened under an approved COVID-safe plan, so consider a visit to our top marine park. And, with the 300 days of sunshine we’re blessed with, there are also plenty of beachside cafes to enjoy that champion local produce.
And you definitely can’t pass up a visit to the Scenic Rim. Less than an hour’s drive from Brisbane and the Gold Coast you’ll find yourself in this World Heritage-listed destination. Situated inside an ancient volcanic caldera, you can enjoy walks among rainforests and spectacular mountains, as well as cycling trails and rock pools. You can also take to the air, with flying, gliding and ballooning, enjoy award-winning wines or explore the art galleries and cafes.
With all we've been through, it's time to start supporting our home turf. Coming together and travelling locally supports local businesses and lets you get to know your own backyard a bit better. It’s also a great opportunity to relax and de-stress!
